Every three years, ConExpo comes around—a huge event for the construction industry taking place this week in Las Vegas. With over 130,000 professionals from across the globe attending, it’s a chance for nearly 2,500 exhibitors to showcase their latest products, services, and tech innovations. As part of our mission to revolutionize construction through BIM adoption, Autodesk has a strong presence here. Day one is done, and I’m excited to share some highlights from our demonstrations.
Our main goal is to spotlight seven key construction-focused apps within the Autodesk Building Design Suite and our Autodesk BIM 360 cloud/mobile solutions for field collaboration. We’re also teaming up with Topcon to demonstrate how connected workflows between the office and the field can enhance construction processes. Specifically, we’ll be showcasing Topcon’s LN-100 Total Station in an Autodesk BIM-driven workflow.
To give you a taste of what we’re presenting with Topcon, picture this scenario: You’re a contractor tasked with maximizing efficiency and profitability. Your current method of translating architects' and engineers' designs into actionable plans on-site involves paper blueprints, measuring tapes, and stakes. While these methods have worked well historically, they’re becoming outdated. Our joint exhibit aims to demonstrate how embracing technology can streamline operations and eliminate reliance on traditional tools.
Step one in our demo involves showing participants how to extract design data from Autodesk Revit or AutoCAD files to generate field points using the Autodesk Point Layout Plugin. Once generated, these points can then be transferred to the Topcon LN-100 handheld controller.
At the Topcon station, attendees will learn how to use laser positioning technology to physically lay out these points. The process involves guiding a Topcon prism (controlled by the LN-100's laser) over a specially designed carpet in the booth that mirrors the building components from the design file. This allows users to accurately stake out field points directly onto the carpet.
The takeaway? By bridging the gap between office planning and on-site execution, we can significantly boost productivity while minimizing mistakes and rework. Contractors can achieve faster installations and higher accuracy rates.
In addition to the Topcon collaboration, we’re demonstrating the latest versions of Autodesk BIM 360 Field and Glue on Apple iPads. These tools emphasize the benefits of cloud-integrated mobile solutions for construction teams. Whether it’s model collaboration or final handover procedures, the BIM 360 platform enables contractors to harness field efficiencies like never before.
For instance, one iPad display shows a live interaction with Autodesk BIM 360 Glue, allowing users to visualize models in augmented reality. Another highlights how field teams can access real-time updates and approvals right from their tablets.
It’s been a busy but rewarding start to the show. Feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive, with many attendees expressing interest in integrating these technologies into their workflows. The future of construction looks bright—and connected!
As I wrap up my first day at ConExpo, I’m reminded why events like this are crucial for pushing boundaries and fostering innovation. Stay tuned for more updates as the week progresses.
