**World’s Most Advanced Fireboat Headed to Houston**
HOUSTON — A two-week journey through four Great Lakes and the Mississippi River will bring the first of three high-performance fireboats to the Port of Houston Authority. These new vessels are set to replace the aging fleet and provide the most advanced firefighting capabilities in the world.
“Being the busiest port in terms of foreign tonnage and home to one of the largest petrochemical complexes, our firefighters play a crucial role in protecting this vital national asset,†said Port Authority Executive Director Len Waterworth. “These new boats will significantly enhance their ability to respond quickly and effectively.â€
The five-person crew includes three members from the Port of Houston Fire Department. They will navigate the fireboat across Lake Ontario and Lake Erie to Detroit on May 22, then through Lake Huron and Lake Michigan to Chicago on May 25. From there, they’ll travel along the Cumberland River, stopping at Lockport on May 26, then follow the Illinois River to St. Louis on May 27. The route continues down the Mississippi River with stops in Cape Girardeau, Memphis, Greenville, and Baton Rouge before reaching Galveston on June 1 and finally arriving in Houston on June 1, 2013.
The voyage is led by Senior Captain Glenn Hood, along with Engine Operators Robert Lacour and Vic Vasquez. All are highly trained firefighters and hazardous materials specialists, with extensive experience and certifications in marine and structural firefighting, as well as emergency medical response.
The Firestorm 70 is a cutting-edge vessel designed for speed, maneuverability, and efficiency. It can reach up to 45 knots—three times faster than the current fleet—and features powerful pumps capable of discharging over 17,000 gallons per minute. The boat also serves as a mobile command center and includes living quarters for extended missions.
Built by MetalCraft Marine, the Firestorm 70 represents a major upgrade in technology and performance. Funds for the vessels came primarily from federal grants, replacing three older boats that had been in service since the 1970s.
MetalCraft Marine, a leader in custom high-performance boats, built the Firestorm 70 with over 20,000 hours of work, ensuring it meets the highest standards of safety and functionality.
