**World’s Most Advanced Fireboat Headed to Houston**
HOUSTON — A two-week journey across four Great Lakes and the Mississippi River is bringing the first of three high-performance fireboats to the Port of Houston Authority. These new vessels will replace the aging fleet and provide the most advanced firefighting capabilities in the world.
“With the Port of Houston being the busiest in terms of foreign tonnage and home to one of the largest petrochemical complexes, our firefighters are on the front lines of protecting this vital national asset,†said Len Waterworth, Executive Director of the Port Authority. “These new boats will significantly enhance our ability to protect lives and property along the 25-mile-long port.â€
The five-person crew includes three members from the Port of Houston Fire Department. They will sail through Lake Ontario and Lake Erie to Detroit, then across Lake Huron and Lake Michigan to Chicago. The route continues via the Cumberland and Illinois Rivers, with stops in Lockport, St. Louis, and various points along the Mississippi River before reaching New Orleans and finally Houston.
The voyage is led by Senior Captain Glenn Hood, with Engine Operators Robert Lacour and Vic Vasquez. All are highly trained firefighters and hazardous materials specialists, licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Firestorm 70 is a cutting-edge, high-speed fireboat built by MetalCraft Marine. It features quad diesel engines that allow it to reach 45 knots—significantly faster than the current fleet’s 14–16 knots. Its maneuverability allows quick stops and sharp turns within three boat lengths.
The vessel functions as both a command center and a firehouse, with sleeping quarters, medical facilities, and powerful pumping systems. It can pump up to 17,000 gallons per minute at 130 PSI, three times more than the old boats. It also has a 450-foot water stream from a roof-mounted monitor.
Funding for the new boats came primarily from federal grants to replace outdated vessels from 1973 and 1983. MetalCraft Marine spent over 20,000 hours building the Firestorm 70 under the guidance of project managers Jay Milner and Ryan Hunter.
The Port of Houston Fire Department currently operates four stations along the Houston Ship Channel, responding to marine and land fires and other emergencies.
