This is a report from John Tobin's account at Saturday's memorial service, marking the 40th anniversary of the tragic Ben Franklin Store fire in Palatine, which took the lives of three brave firefighters.
The ceremony was a touching event where friends and families gathered to honor the memory of those who lost their lives. It was particularly moving to see pictures of Plote Transport carefully moving the old firefighting vehicles, reminiscent of two "old war horses" finally reunited after 25 long years apart. The presence of the honor guard added solemnity, along with the vintage rural pumper from the Palatine Fire Department. Families of the fallen firefighters were present, as well as the community coming together at the PFD memorial. As always, it was a deeply emotional day, and I couldn't help but reflect on how emotions still run so deep even after all these years.
Attached are some photos captured by John Tobin. The first shows Plote Contractors bringing back one of the historic fire trucks, a poignant reminder of the past. Another image features an old Seagrave Snorkel mounted on a lowboy trailer, a piece of history being transported for restoration or display. There are also shots of two classic Seagrave engines, their sleek designs a testament to earlier times in firefighting history. A close-up of the old Palatine FD Snorkel gives us a detailed look at its structure, while another captures the fire department honor guard standing tall and proud. The Palatine Fire Department itself looks impressive in one shot, while another focuses on an old Seagrave engine from the Palatine Rural FPD. Family members of the fallen firefighters, many of whom showed immense courage and heroism, attended the service, their faces filled with both sorrow and pride. The Palatine Firefighter Memorial stands as a permanent tribute to those who gave their lives in service. John Tobin himself was there, capturing every moment with his camera.
