The Office of Emergency Management and Communications, responsible for managing the 9-1-1 communications center, has announced a series of personnel adjustments set to take effect on January 1, 2012. These changes will impact both fire and police communication staff. For the fire department specifically, the following modifications will occur:
Four senior alarm board operators will be downgraded to the role of dispatcher. Two current dispatchers will be reassigned to work as call takers, while at least five call takers face potential job losses. Currently, each shift has a senior alarm board operator dedicated to overseeing both the Englewood and Main operations. Starting January 1st, these responsibilities will be consolidated into a single position.
This news comes amid growing concerns from within the department. According to the Occupy Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) Facebook page, notices of demotion and pink slips were handed out to 911 operators on December 16, 2011.
CBS Chicago also reported on the situation, quoting Office of Emergency Management and Communications supervisor Shanita Carter, who expressed her worries about the impact of these cuts on emergency services. Carter emphasized that reducing an already understaffed and overburdened workforce could lead to critical delays in response times, particularly in high-crime areas where services are already stretched thin. She pointed out that supervisors play a vital role in training and motivating call takers, yet they are now being targeted for layoffs alongside other staff members.
Carter highlighted that supervisors are crucial for maintaining morale and ensuring consistent service delivery. With current staff already overwhelmed, adding more pressure by cutting supervisory roles could have severe consequences for public safety. In response, 28 aldermen recently signed a letter expressing concerns about proposed budget cuts, singling out reductions to OEMC and library services as particularly troubling. These cuts threaten to result in significant layoffs across various departments.
As these changes approach, there remains widespread anxiety among those affected. Many worry that such measures could compromise the quality of emergency responses throughout Chicago, leaving residents vulnerable in times of need.
