2014 Corolla export

The 2014 Corolla will be exported from the USA to markets in Central America

The 2014 Toyota Corolla has just rolled out to dealers across the U.S., but Toyota is already looking ahead. The automaker announced plans to export U.S.-built Corollas to 18 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean starting in 2015. These vehicles are currently being produced at Toyota’s factory in Tupelo, Mississippi. This move continues a trend of increasing U.S. production for global markets. “Toyota's export efforts are growing, with the U.S. playing a key role in supplying vehicles to international markets,” said Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota’s North America Region. He highlighted that this initiative builds on Toyota’s record-breaking exports in 2012, when over 124,000 U.S.-assembled vehicles were shipped to 21 countries—a 45% increase from the previous year. Although Toyota still imports around 22% of its vehicles sold in the U.S., shifting more production to American factories helps reduce costs and risks tied to currency fluctuations. Shipping cars from North America to Latin America is also more cost-effective than shipping from Japan. This isn’t the first time Toyota has exported U.S.-built models. In 2011, the company began sending Siennas from Indiana to South Korea, marking the first time the minivan was exported outside North America. And in 2008, Toyota started exporting the Tundra and Sequoia to Latin America and the Middle East—showing that these regions have long been important markets. With growing economies in places like Russia, China, and the Middle East, demand for larger vehicles such as SUVs and trucks is rising. Toyota is well positioned to meet this demand through its expanding U.S. manufacturing base. “By exporting U.S.-built Corollas to Latin America and the Caribbean, we’re reinforcing our commitment to American manufacturing and supporting jobs right here at home,” Lentz added. While this strategy benefits American workers by keeping production local, it also means fewer Corollas are available for domestic buyers. However, the Corolla remains a reliable and popular choice in any market. Author Frank Rockwell is a car enthusiast and retired auto mechanic.
