This message is from Steve Redick:
I just came across some old photos from the Warren Redick collection that really caught my attention. They’re images of an 11-alarm fire that broke out in Chicago on April 14, 1970. I've included three different shots here—each one giving a slightly different perspective of the chaos and destruction.
The first photo shows the towering flames reaching high into the night sky. It's incredible how such a massive fire could erupt in a city like Chicago. You can see the firefighters working hard to bring it under control, their lights illuminating the darkened streets. The smoke is so thick that it almost blurs the background.
In the second image, there’s more focus on the firefighters themselves. Some are spraying water directly onto the blaze while others seem to be coordinating efforts. There’s this sense of urgency and teamwork among them, which is inspiring even though the situation looks dire. The contrast between the orange glow of the fire and the blue hues of the emergency lights creates a striking visual effect.
The third picture offers a different angle, capturing the aftermath of the fire. Parts of the building have collapsed, leaving behind a scene of devastation. It’s hard to imagine what the residents might have gone through during those tense moments. Still, you can see the resilience of both the firefighters and the community as they work together to clean up and recover.
These photos really transport me back to that era. It makes me think about how far firefighting techniques have come since then, but also how certain aspects of these situations remain timeless. The dedication and courage shown by those involved never change, no matter the year or location.
Anyway, if anyone recognizes any landmarks or people in these pictures, let me know! I’d love to hear your thoughts or any stories related to this event.
Best,
Steve
