**From Steve Redick:** Saturday morning (May 7, 2016), I accidentally came across an accident scene on the eastbound side of JFK Expressway near Sayre Avenue. Unfortunately, the situation turned out to be quite tragic, resulting in one fatality. As someone who has been documenting emergency response scenes for years, I couldn't help but capture some photos of the entire event, including the extrication process and the positioning of the firefighting apparatus. What struck me most during this incident was the use of battery-operated hydraulic spreaders and cutting tools. I had never seen such equipment in action before. They seemed to utilize two sets of spreaders along with a reciprocating saw to free the trapped driver. Even though it was a devastating situation, I felt the educational value of these images could benefit others in the field. Training scenarios often lack real-world context, and these photos might offer valuable insights into how modern tools can be employed in critical situations. Below are some of the images I captured. While they document a grim event, they also highlight the professionalism and skill of our first responders. --- *Image Descriptions:* 1. A wide shot of the crash scene on the highway, showing the aftermath of the collision and the initial setup by firefighters. 2. Firefighters working diligently to extricate the driver from the wreckage using hydraulic spreaders. 3. Another angle showcasing the team effort involved in the rescue operation. 4. Close-up of the specialized tools being used to cut through metal debris. 5. Chicago Fire Department's Squad 7 arriving at the scene, ready to assist. 6. An ambulance parked nearby, prepared to transport anyone needing medical attention. 7. A broader view of Engine 119 positioned strategically to provide support. 8. Firefighters assessing the situation post-extrication, ensuring no further hazards remain. 9. The final image captures the solemnity of the moment, reflecting both tragedy and resilience. --- I hope these images serve as a reminder of the importance of preparation and teamwork in emergency services. Though it’s difficult to find positivity in such events, the learning opportunities they present are invaluable. Best, Steve
