I just came across something shared by Steve Redick. He mentioned that he accidentally witnessed an incident early Saturday morning (May 7, 2016), involving a collision on the eastbound side of JFK at Sayre. Unfortunately, the situation ended tragically with one fatality. What caught my attention was how Steve managed to capture some powerful images of the entire event, including the aftermath and the efforts of the firefighters using specialized equipment to extricate the driver.
He noted that it was his first time seeing battery-operated spreaders and other tools in action. The firefighters seemed to use multiple sets of spreaders along with a reciprocating saw. Even though the incident was deeply distressing, Steve felt that the training value of these photos could be beneficial for others in the field.
Attached are several images he shared. In one picture, you can see firefighters hard at work trying to rescue the trapped driver. Another shot shows the aftermath of the crash, providing a clear view of the damage and the placement of emergency vehicles. There’s also an image featuring Chicago Fire Department Squad 7, alongside their ambulance and engine units, all actively engaged in the response effort.
Despite the grim circumstances, I have to admit, these visuals offer a unique perspective into the kind of challenges first responders face daily. They remind us of both the risks involved and the dedication required to save lives. Steve's photos not only document the severity of the situation but also highlight the importance of proper training and preparation for such emergencies.
