I just attended a very moving memorial service this Saturday to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the tragic Ben Franklin Store fire in Palatine, which sadly took the lives of three brave firefighters back in 1973. It was great to see so many friends and family members come together to pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
As I stood there, it was touching to see the pictures of Plote Transport carefully moving the precious cargo – two historic fire trucks that had been separated for 25 years finally being reunited. The honor guard was present, along with a rural pumper from the Palatine Fire Department. Families of the fallen firefighters were there too, as well as the PFD memorial site. It brought back a flood of emotions, even after all these years.
I took some photos myself, capturing moments like the old Seagrave fire engines being transported, the emotional honor guard standing tall, and the families remembering their loved ones. It's incredible how much history is tied up in these old vehicles and the memories they hold.
Looking at the pictures now, I can almost feel the weight of those memories. There's something special about seeing these old Seagrave engines, especially the one that was part of the Palatine Rural FPD. And then there's the Palatine Firefighter Memorial, where the names of those we lost are etched forever.
It was also heartwarming to see fellow firefighter John Tobin from Elgin there, standing proud and strong. He's been a great source of support and inspiration for so many of us over the years.
