On Saturday morning, May 18, 2019, the Wilmette Fire Department hosted an open house event that drew many residents eager to see the department's history and new equipment. Among the highlights were several vintage fire apparatus, which gave attendees a glimpse into the past. The day also featured the ceremonial introduction of Engine 27, a brand-new 2019 Pierce Dash CF PUC model with unit number 32569. After being showcased, the engine was ceremoniously pushed into its new home at Station 27.
Engine 27 is equipped with a powerful 1,500 GPM pump, 750 gallons of water, and a foam cell that can hold either 20 or 30 gallons. It also features a 35-foot ground ladder and is designed to operate as Engine 26 if the tower ladder is unavailable. The previous Engine 26, a 2013 E-One model, will now serve as a reserve unit.
The event was a great opportunity for the community to connect with local firefighters and learn more about the department’s operations. Several photos from the event capture the excitement, including images of firefighters pushing the new engine into the station and posing with it. These moments were shared by photographer Larry Shapiro, who documented the day’s activities.
In addition to the open house, the Wilmette FD recently sold their reserve tower ladder, and they currently have another engine available for sale. This continues the department’s efforts to modernize and maintain a strong, well-equipped fire service for the community.
