On Saturday night, May 20, 2017, the Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) responded to a call reporting a basement fire with explosions at 4 Keuka Court in Hawthorn Woods. The homeowner mentioned that model cars with batteries were stored in the basement, which may have contributed to the explosive sounds. A thick fog covered the area, and firefighters arrived to find light-colored smoke escaping from the house.
The incident was initially classified as a working fire, but it quickly escalated to a Full Still, prompting a Box Alarm for change of quarters companies only. Interior crews struggled to locate the fire's origin in the basement, and the need for a larger water supply led to an upgrade to a Box Alarm for tenders. This event occurred during the early stages of a 2nd Alarm fire being tackled by the Wauconda FPD in a neighboring district. As a result, several units assigned to the Countryside fire were already committed elsewhere, requiring backup companies from the next level on the box card to be dispatched.
As the fire intensified and spread to part of the first floor, all crews were ordered to evacuate the building, shifting tactics to a defensive approach. About 35 minutes into the incident, the alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm. Shortly after, the fire was contained, allowing firefighters to re-enter the home to tackle remaining hot spots.
Due to the simultaneous extra-alarm fires, the response to the Hawthorn Woods incident included units from Northbrook, Antioch, Newport Township, North Chicago, Hoffman Estates, Prospect Heights, Zion, Fox River Grove, and even the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. An unofficial count suggested there were eight tenders at the scene.
Photos from the event capture the intensity of the fire, showing firefighters battling the blaze from outside, heavy smoke billowing from the structure, and emergency vehicles responding to the scene. Additional images are available at Shapirophotography.net.
