Of interest … a Northbrook firefighter (more)

Steve De Luca, a firefighter from Northbrook and resident of Mount Prospect, has made a name for himself not just through his service, but through his incredible personal journey. This summer, he’s set to run a half-marathon in July, followed by the Ironman Wisconsin in September, and then the Chicago Marathon in October—his 25th time running the race.

But there's an even more meaningful milestone coming up in 2017: Steve is aiming to celebrate 16 years of being cancer-free after battling stage 3 colon cancer back in 2001. His recovery was no small feat, and it’s one that continues to inspire those around him.

De Luca’s challenges didn’t end with cancer. Over 20 years ago, surgeons removed a benign acoustic neuroma from his head, which left him with nearly total hearing loss in his left ear. Now, his right ear is also beginning to deteriorate, making everyday life a bit more difficult.

Despite these struggles, De Luca has never let them define him. As a firefighter apparatus engineer for 26 years, he worried that his hearing loss might force him out of the profession. But with the help of advanced hearing aids in both ears, he’s been able to continue working. These devices help him locate sounds and recognize emergency dispatch tones, keeping him alert and ready on the job.

Northbrook Fire Chief Jose Torres says De Luca is one of only a few firefighters in the department—nearly 100 members—who wears two hearing aids while on duty. That alone speaks volumes about his dedication and adaptability.

Thanks to his own health battles, De Luca has become a strong advocate for health and wellness within the fire department. He strongly supports the use of air quality monitors, especially in environments where firefighters are exposed to toxic fumes and dangerous gases.

Although all firefighters use breathing equipment during emergencies, they often face lingering exposure during cleanup. That’s why Chief Torres recently asked De Luca to join the department’s health and wellness committee. His unique perspective, shaped by his own experiences, brings valuable insight to the team.

“He’s respected not just for his endurance events,” said Torres. “But more importantly, he inspires others. He runs for more than himself—he does it for people still fighting cancer.”
