In the past three years, Zongshen Group Chairman Zuo Zongshen has announced a bold vision: to establish its own "unique" supplier network and move Chongqing out of the "assembly" era, leading the region into a true "manufacturing" era. Unlike many Chinese motorcycle manufacturers, which operate as full-fledged "assembly plants"—rarely producing their own parts and instead purchasing components from third parties—Zongshen aims to break this trend. The result of such an approach is that motorcycles from different brands often have nearly identical quality, with only branding distinguishing them.
To address this issue of homogeneity among the thousands of vehicles on the market, Zongshen Group is investing hundreds of millions of yuan to create a group of accessory companies that will exclusively supply parts for Zongshen products. This strategic move is aimed at building a more sustainable and differentiated manufacturing base.
According to this year's Forbes list, Zuo Zongshen ranks 66th among the world's richest people, with a net worth of $150 million. As the richest person in Chongqing, he also revealed his five- to ten-year development plan for Zongshen Group. Among the key initiatives is the production of regional aircraft engines. Zuo mentioned that the company has already been in contact with French Airbus suppliers, signaling a significant shift toward high-tech industries.
Additionally, Zongshen plans to launch a new motorcycle brand in collaboration with Harley-Davidson in the U.S. Within three years, the company intends to introduce new models internationally and expand its global footprint. These ambitious steps reflect Zongshen’s determination to evolve from a traditional manufacturer into a leader in advanced manufacturing and international markets.
