Threads play a crucial role in maintaining the structural integrity of various components. Given the significant load they often bear, it's not uncommon for them to become damaged. However, there's no need to discard or replace an entire part just because of thread damage. Repairing internal threads is a manageable task, especially when you have the right tools at your disposal. In this post, we introduce two professional solutions: BaerCoil® and BaerFix®—two reliable options for restoring damaged internal threads.
When it comes to DIY repairs, many people wonder if household items can be used. While it might seem tempting, using improper tools or materials can lead to further damage. Instead, we recommend using specialized products designed for thread repair. With BaerCoil® and BaerFix®, even beginners can tackle internal thread repairs quickly, easily, and cost-effectively.
BaerCoil® wire thread inserts are made from cold-formed wire with a diamond-shaped cross-section. This design ensures maximum stability while taking up minimal space, making them ideal for repairing internal threads without compromising the structure. These inserts come in three types: free-running, screw grip (screw-locking), and NoTang (without tang). Each variant offers unique benefits depending on the application.
The free-running type is available in materials such as stainless steel V2A, V4A, Inconel X750, and bronze, offering versatility for different environments. The screw grip version features polygonal turns that provide a strong clamping force, making it suitable for high-stress situations. The NoTang option simplifies installation by eliminating the need for a tang.
To install BaerCoil® inserts, you'll need a twist drill bit, the appropriate STI tap, a countersink tool, an installation tool, and a tang breaker. All these tools are available in convenient sets, making the process even easier.
The installation steps are straightforward: drill out the damaged area, cut the receiving thread, place the insert on the tool, screw it in, and break the tang. This method ensures a durable and long-lasting repair.
BaerFix® thread inserts, on the other hand, use a self-tapping mechanism, which means they can create their own thread without requiring pre-cutting. This makes them ideal for soft or low-shear strength materials. They come in different versions, including those with cutting slots or holes, suitable for various machining conditions.
Installation of BaerFix® is simple: drill the hole, attach the insert to the installation tool, and screw it in. No need for complex setups, making it a great choice for quick fixes.
In terms of application, BaerCoil® is more flexible and suitable for a wide range of materials, including harder ones up to around 750 N/mm². It distributes stress evenly across the threads, enhancing load-bearing capacity. BaerFix® excels in softer materials, where its thick-walled design provides strong, precise connections. However, it may not be ideal for very hard materials due to its limitations in cutting ability.
Both systems are user-friendly and perfect for home repairs. Whether you're working with soft materials or need a versatile solution, BaerCoil® and BaerFix® offer reliable options. You can find both in the BAER online shop, ready to help you restore your components efficiently.
