A check valve is an automatic valve designed to prevent the reverse flow of media, protecting pumps and motors from damage due to backflow. It also helps in discharging the medium from containers. In addition, it can be used in pipelines where pressure may rise above system pressure, providing an auxiliary supply.
Based on its structure and installation method, check valves can be categorized as follows:
1. Swing Check Valve: The disc is cylindrical and rotates around the seat axis. This type has lower flow resistance compared to lift check valves, making it suitable for low flow rates and large diameters. However, it should not be used in pulsating flows, as its sealing performance is less effective than that of lift-type valves. Swing check valves come in single-disc, double-disc, and multi-disc versions, depending on the valve size, to prevent media stoppage or backflow and reduce hydraulic shock.
2. Lift Check Valve: The disc moves vertically along the body’s axis. These valves are typically installed in horizontal pipelines and are commonly used for high-pressure, small-diameter applications, where the disc may be a ball. Their design resembles globe valves, resulting in higher flow resistance. They feature a guided sleeve that allows the disc to move freely. When the media flows downstream, the disc opens under the pressure, and when the flow stops, it closes automatically to prevent backflow. There are two types: straight-through and vertical lift, with the latter offering lower resistance.
