LAS VEGAS – (BUSINESS WIRE) – At its annual user conference, Autodesk University, Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) introduced BIM 360 Docs, a cloud-based platform designed specifically for the construction industry. This new tool offers a centralized digital space where teams can create, access, review, and share 2D and 3D project documents, plans, and models in real time.
According to an industry report by Autodesk titled “Making the Grade†from 2013, up to 25% of construction work is rework, and about 10% of materials are wasted. Much of this inefficiency stems from the complex and error-prone management of thousands of project documents. The current system often involves multiple document management tools, leading to confusion, delays, and costly mistakes on job sites.
Previously known as Project Alexandria, BIM 360 Docs aims to streamline collaboration and reduce errors by ensuring that all team members are working with the most up-to-date information. It’s built to bring clarity and efficiency to the entire construction lifecycle.
“A comprehensive solution has been missing in construction management for far too long,†said Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President of Products at Autodesk. “The lack of integrated tools has cost the industry time and money. We saw the need, brought our expertise to the table, and now we’re delivering a powerful step forward.â€
BIM 360 Docs allows real-time collaboration across all project phases. Key features include:
- A seamless integration between 2D and 3D views, enabling users to switch between formats effortlessly.
- Secure access controls and approval workflows to ensure everyone uses the latest version of documents.
- Fast and smooth viewing of large PDFs, especially optimized for Apple iOS devices.
- Automated organization of original and updated documents with advanced OCR for title blocks.
Industry experts, including architects, engineers, contractors, and owners, were involved in testing and shaping the final product. Jason Reece, Technology and Innovation Improvement Lead at Balfour Beatty Construction, praised the platform, saying, “Document management has always been a pain point in construction. BIM 360 Docs looks like it could finally provide a real solution.â€
