The optical limiter includes an alternating layer of amorphous silicon dioxide (SiO2) and silicon nitride (Si3N4) with a gallium arsenide (GaAs) layer ("defect" layer) in the middle. At low intensities, the resonances caused by the defect modes give the device high light transmittance, and when the light intensity exceeds a certain level, the two-photon absorption in the defect layer breaks the resonance mode and makes the entire device have a higher reflection rate.
