New zeolite membrane for ethanol dehydration
Hitachi Shipbuilding Corporation from Japan is currently implementing a cutting-edge membrane technology in its HDS (Hydrogen Dehydration System) for industrial use. This innovative system is specifically designed for the dehydration of ethanol and isopropanol, demonstrating exceptional performance. For instance, when processing 10% aqueous ethanol, it can produce a mixture with a purity of up to 99.7% ethanol and water. The dehydration efficiency of this system exceeds two times that of traditional ceramic membrane processes, making it a significant advancement in the field.
The membrane element used in this system is composed of a zeolite layer coated onto a porous alumina tube, with one end sealed. Hitachi has already conducted tests using a prototype device capable of processing 30 cubic meters of ethanol per day, successfully validating the technology's effectiveness. The company is now planning to scale up production of the zeolite membranes, with an expected expansion in 2008. This development highlights Hitachi's commitment to improving industrial separation technologies and enhancing the efficiency of alcohol dehydration processes.
