The National People's Congress, Chairman of Weichai Holding Group Co., Ltd., Tan Xuguang, emphasized the importance of independent innovation in enterprise development. Similarly, Sun Junshu, Chairman of Inspur Group Co., Ltd., and Zhang Zhifa, NPC deputy and Vice President of Sinoma Co., Ltd., shared their insights on how companies can lead in technological innovation.
In the government work report, it was stated that policies supporting independent innovation should be improved and implemented, with enterprises playing a central role in technological advancement. When asked about Weichai’s growth over the past decade—from a company with sales of 570 million yuan and a loss of 300 million yuan to an industry leader with revenue exceeding 40 billion yuan and profits of 3.5 billion yuan—Tan Xuguang attributed this success to the company's ability to innovate independently.
In 2006, Weichai launched a 12-liter engine with independent intellectual property, breaking foreign monopolies on high-horsepower engines. Recently, Weichai successfully developed an engine meeting Euro IV emission standards, showing a fast product update cycle and strong market responsiveness.
When asked about “leading the market,†Tan explained that it means anticipating customer needs before they arise. For example, Weichai developed the WD12 engine, which combined long-term testing and market validation to meet the demand for high-performance heavy truck engines. This product became a market favorite and helped Weichai dominate the domestic market for large-displacement engines.
Another key aspect of innovation is setting industry standards. Enterprises should actively participate in or lead the formulation of national and international standards. By converting technological advantages into standards, companies can build lasting competitive advantages.
Sun Junshu from Inspur highlighted how the company has contributed to more than 10 national standards in areas like enterprise informatization and tax control cash registers. He noted that while technical superiority is important, it must be transformed into patents and then into standards to establish a leading position in the industry.
Zhang Zhifa, a cement originator, shared his view on innovation. He believes that innovation doesn't always require massive resources or long-term research. Sometimes, it's simply a matter of combining existing ideas. For instance, he used microwave technology to improve the efficiency of drying glass fiber, cutting time in half and reducing energy consumption. His idea came from a simple observation of a microwave oven, proving that creativity often comes from unexpected places.
