The National People's Congress, Chairman of Weichai Holding Group Co., Ltd., Tan Xuguang, the National People's Congress, Chairman of Inspur Group Co., Ltd., Sun Junshu, and NPC deputy, Vice President of Sinoma Co., Ltd. and Chairman of Taishan Fiberglass Co., Ltd., Zhang Zhifa, shared their insights on how enterprises can play a leading role in technological innovation and enhance their independent capabilities.
In the government work report, it was emphasized to improve and implement policies supporting independent innovation, strengthen the role of enterprises as the main force in technological development, and encourage companies to increase R&D investment. The question then arises: How can companies effectively take the lead in technological innovation?
Market demand serves as the key reference system for innovation. Innovation should not be done in isolation. The essence of innovation lies in leadership—not only in core technologies but also in understanding market needs. Companies must remain open, observe competitors, and keep an eye on industry trends. Ultimately, the direction of innovation is determined by the market, and success is measured by market acceptance.
When asked about the driving force behind Weichai’s growth over the past decade—transforming from a company with sales of 570 million yuan and a loss of 300 million yuan to an industry leader with sales exceeding 40 billion yuan and profits of 3.5 billion yuan—Tan Xuguang emphasized that the core of enterprise development lies in its ability to innovate independently.
In 2006, Weichai launched its first 12-liter engine with independent intellectual property, breaking foreign monopolies on engines over 380 horsepower. Now, with the implementation of the National III engine standard, Weichai has developed a new engine meeting Euro IV emission standards. Their product update speed is fast, and their market response is even ahead of the market.
When asked about what "leading the market" means, Tan Xuguang explained that for heavy trucks, achieving both high power and speed is challenging. To address this, Weichai developed the WD12 engine, which became China’s largest commercial vehicle engine. After years of testing and market validation, it was successfully introduced and gained strong market recognition.
Another key aspect of technological innovation is setting industry standards. Leading companies must actively participate in or shape national and international standards. By converting technological superiority into industry standards, companies can build sustainable competitive advantages.
Inspur, for instance, has contributed to more than 10 national standards in enterprise informatization and tax control cash registers. According to Sun Junshu, first-class enterprises establish industry standards through brand strength. Inspur played a key role in drafting the first national server security standard in 2007, demonstrating the importance of turning technical advantages into patents and then into standards.
Finally, creative thinking is crucial for breakthroughs. Innovation requires not just perseverance but also agility. Sometimes, a small idea can make a big difference. As Zhang Zhifa explained, innovation often comes from combining existing ideas rather than long, expensive research. For example, his microwave drying technology for glass fiber was inspired by a household microwave oven, reducing drying time by half and cutting energy consumption.
