Due to outdated technology and inefficient processes, many of its early products were resource-intensive and environmentally harmful. Starting in the 1980s and 1990s, the company gradually phased out low-value-added products such as bicycle tires, rubber powder, activated carbon, and benzoic acid—products that had high pollution levels and poor working conditions. Though this affected short-term profits, the company believed it was a necessary step toward long-term sustainability. It invested 48 million yuan in wastewater treatment systems, focusing on the disposal of salty wastewater. Today, 10% of treated wastewater is reused annually, and the company now produces high-value, low-pollution products like medical rubber, polyether polyols, and fluorine-free polyethers, which account for 90% of its total output. The second transformation involved increasing investment in environmental protection and improving end-of-pipe treatment. The company implemented numerous projects, including biochemical wastewater treatment, calcium chloride recovery, resin plant wastewater treatment, and the relocation of key facilities. These projects, totaling over 100 million yuan, helped the company meet strict discharge standards. In collaboration with industry associations, the company also introduced advanced technologies, such as the A/DAT-IAT combined treatment process, which improved efficiency and reduced costs by up to 30%. This innovation has since been adopted by other companies in the industry. The third leap came with the relocation of certain production facilities from urban areas. The company moved its rubber and plastic plants to the Dongda Industrial Park, where new, cleaner production methods were implemented. The relocated facility now operates at a higher standard, with a cleanroom classification of 300,000 levels and leading-edge equipment. This move significantly reduced noise and dust pollution, improving both environmental and operational performance. Today, Shandong Dongda Chemical continues to strive for a greener future. It has passed the clean production audit and received a Class B certificate from the Shandong Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau. Looking ahead, the company plans to build a new production unit during the "11th Five-Year Plan" period, aiming to produce 100,000 tons of propylene oxide and 150,000 tons of polyether annually. By then, its annual sales revenue is expected to exceed 5 billion yuan, solidifying its position as one of the largest chemical material production bases in northern China.
