The first quarter oil and chemical inflation risk increased

On April 18, a reporter learned from the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association that in the first quarter of this year, prices of 162 key products tracked by the industry have generally risen, with some experiencing sharp increases. According to data from the General Administration of Customs, imports of major petroleum and chemical products such as crude oil, refined oil, pesticides, natural rubber, synthetic rubber, and fertilizers showed a significant upward trend in both volume and value. This surge in import activity has contributed to rising domestic and global prices, placing growing inflationary pressure on the entire industry. Li Xiaochao, Director of the National Statistics Division at the National Bureau of Statistics, noted on April 16 that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in China rose by 8% year-on-year in the first quarter, up from 5.3% in the same period last year. This reflects a continued acceleration in price growth, especially after the sharp rise in global commodity prices last year. With raw material costs, including crude oil and coal, surging, many industries—especially those involved in oil refining—have shifted from profitability to losses. Meanwhile, profits across other sectors have also seen a steep decline. According to the latest customs statistics, crude oil imports in the first quarter increased by 14.9% year-on-year in volume, but the total value jumped by 90.6%. Refined oil imports rose by 13.8%, while the value climbed 82.8%. Pesticide imports grew by 2.7%, with a 16.2% increase in value. Natural rubber imports surged by 30.8%, and the value rose by 79.8%. Synthetic rubber imports increased by 3.8%, with a 28.7% rise in value. Fertilizer imports, however, fell by 36.4% in volume, though the value only decreased by 8.7%. The China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association reported that, among the 162 key products, 113 saw year-on-year price increases in March, accounting for two-thirds of the total, or 69.75%. Notably, the price of butyl rubber and sulfuric acid more than doubled compared to the same period last year, while sulfur prices rose by over 2.5 times. A representative from the association stated that the ongoing price hikes are creating significant challenges for the chemical industry. On one hand, the persistent rise in energy and raw material costs is pushing up product prices. On the other hand, downstream enterprises have limited capacity to absorb these costs, leading to a tough situation where cost pressures are high and the ability to pass on costs is limited. The association recommends that chemical companies focus on reducing raw material and energy consumption, lowering production costs, and enhancing their competitive edge in the market.
