Autodesk has always believed in empowering creators to imagine and build a better future. Access to powerful tools is essential for that vision, which is why we're taking an important step forward by open-sourcing RV, our award-winning media review and playback software. Alongside contributions from DNEG’s xStudio and Sony Pictures Imageworks’ itview, this will help shape the Open Review Initiative, the Academy Software Foundation's (ASWF) latest sandbox project. The goal is to develop a unified, open-source toolset for playback, review, and approval across the film and entertainment industry. As a founding member of ASWF, Autodesk supports the foundation’s mission to promote open-source software within the motion picture industry. Launched in 2018 under The Linux Foundation, the ASWF aims to foster collaboration and streamline workflows across global teams. By embracing open standards like MaterialX, OpenTimelineIO, and USD, Autodesk continues to support the shift toward cloud-based and more flexible production environments. "Sharing RV with the open-source community is a natural progression in our journey to adopt cloud workflows and open standards," said Diana Colella, SVP of Media & Entertainment at Autodesk. "With content demand reaching record levels, we’re excited to help build a more resilient and collaborative industry." RV is a professional-grade media player used by VFX and animation artists to review high-resolution images and sequences in real time. It allows teams to compare different versions and collaborate efficiently throughout the production process. This makes it an essential part of many studios' pipelines. "RV plays a critical role in our animation workflow, and sharing it with the industry opens up new possibilities for collaboration," said Darin Grant, CTO of Animal Logic and AWSF board member. "It’s similar to what we’ve done with Autodesk and Pixar to integrate our ALUSDMaya toolsets into the Maya-USD plugin. Like their contributions to OpenColorIO, Autodesk is once again showing its strong commitment to open source by sharing key libraries and tools that will drive the industry forward." Autodesk acquired RV from Tweak Software in 2015 and integrated it into the ShotGrid production management platform. This integration has helped eliminate workflow bottlenecks, enable live collaborative reviews, and speed up the review process. While RV is now open source, Autodesk will continue to support it commercially as part of the ShotGrid ecosystem. For more information about RV, visit the ShotGrid website.
