At Autodesk, we're witnessing a major digital transformation in the architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO) industry. This shift is toward a smarter, more resilient way of designing and building our homes, workplaces, and communities. However, this journey isn't without its challenges. With a $3.7 trillion infrastructure gap, massive waste from construction and demolition, growing project complexity, and tight budgets, the AECO industry needs innovative solutions to thrive. We believe that outcome-based BIM is the key to achieving sustainable results like carbon neutrality and reduced waste throughout the entire project lifecycle. The foundation of this approach is data—data that's granular, accessible, and open, bringing together teams across the project lifecycle. Better data helps meet accelerated timelines, provides AI-powered insights to boost productivity, and supports informed decision-making, reducing risks down the line. We are working closely with our customers to shape the future of BIM. In many ways, we've already started the next era of the AECO industry. We're excited to share our progress at Autodesk University (AU) 2024. We're building Autodesk Forma, the AECO industry cloud, to connect project data—from within Autodesk and third-party solutions alike—to unify BIM workflows across design, build, and operation teams. At the heart of this is Autodesk Docs, our common data environment for the AECO industry. Autodesk Docs acts as a central hub, connecting, organizing, and securing data across tools like AutoCAD, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Revit, Tandem, Civil 3D, and Autodesk Workshop XR. This ensures the right data reaches the right people at the right time, throughout the project lifecycle. Earlier this year, we released the AEC Data Model API, an important step toward enabling granular data for Autodesk Docs users. Now, we've reached another milestone: Autodesk Forma is now connected to Autodesk Docs, Autodesk’s AECO data repository. This connection brings new workflows and opportunities to unite teams and project data, boosting collaboration. For example, the Forma Board, our digital whiteboard and collaboration tool, can now import visuals from Autodesk Docs files, allowing architects, engineers, and contractors to collaborate around live digital concepts—all powered by centralized data. The Forma Board, powered by Autodesk Docs, connects project stakeholders around a live digital concept. This is just the beginning. Over time, Autodesk Forma’s integration with Autodesk Docs will enhance the connection between Forma and Revit, creating a seamless flow between planning tools and detailed design capabilities. We’re also improving collaboration with the commercial release of Autodesk Workshop XR, an immersive design review workspace connected to Autodesk Docs. Workshop XR allows teams to walk through 3D models at human scale, offering a deeper understanding of spatial experiences and helping catch design issues early, preventing costly rework and delays. Getting data right is foundational to advancing outcome-based BIM and improving customer workflows with AI. At AU, we’ll be showcasing exciting advancements from Autodesk AI that improve productivity, creativity, and sustainability. Take Embodied Carbon Analysis in Autodesk Forma, now in beta. The earlier you measure the carbon footprint of materials in the design process, the greater your impact on sustainability outcomes. This AI-powered feature lets designers test material choices from day one, part of Autodesk’s Total Carbon Analysis for Architects in the AEC Collection. Autodesk AI is also making it easier to extract insights from large datasets. With the beta release of Autodesk Assistant in Autodesk Construction Cloud, users can ask questions about their specification documents using natural language prompts. It can answer specific queries, generate lists, or draft summaries, saving time and reducing risk over time. Autodesk Assistant in Autodesk Construction Cloud helps users find relevant information in their specification documents. We’re also expanding our partnership with Esri, with plans to expand Esri’s data availability within Autodesk Forma. This will give architects access to contextual geographic data earlier in the design process, including terrain, zoning, roads, property boundaries, and more. This integration will help create more sustainable, resilient projects that better serve local communities. The expanded integration between Esri’s ArcGIS and Autodesk Forma helps architects design with location in mind. As we continue this AECO transformation, investing in our core portfolio—Revit, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Autodesk Construction Cloud—is essential. These tools are connected to Autodesk Docs and are vital to the future of outcome-based BIM. We’re committed to continuous improvements in these products to drive business resilience and efficiency for our customers. Recent releases of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Revit have delivered over 500 features and enhancements, many based on customer feedback. The core portfolio is the on-ramp to outcome-based BIM. We’re dedicated to helping our customers succeed today while building toward the future with Autodesk Forma as the AECO industry cloud. These announcements from AU 2024 show how the future of BIM is becoming a reality today. For example, Baker Barrios Architects is using Autodesk Forma to create a digital workflow that unifies multiple software tools into one platform, supporting an outcome-based design approach. Wayne Dunkelberger, chief design officer at Baker Barrios, calls Autodesk Forma a “seismic shift†for the firm: “It’s like a time machine where you see what the real world will feel like when the building is actually on site.†He also highlights how the ability to perform multiple tasks in one tool frees up designers to be more creative in solving client problems. Baker Barrios Architects is using Autodesk Forma to design with an outcome-based approach. The success of customers like Baker Barrios shows that while the journey to the future is challenging, we are well on our way. With data, AI, and Autodesk Forma, we’re creating a future with less waste, less knowledge loss, and less friction from design to construction to operation—working together to make it happen.
