**WASHINGTON — (BUSINESS WIRE) —** Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) and the Smithsonian have launched the **Smithsonian x3D Explorer**, an interactive 3D educational platform available to anyone with a web browser. Developed exclusively for the Smithsonian by Autodesk, this tool aims to make rare and valuable collections more accessible, bringing their stories to life in a way never seen before.
With 3D technology now transforming how museums present their collections—similar to its impact on entertainment, architecture, and manufacturing—the Smithsonian is leading the charge in this digital revolution.
Gunter Waibel, head of the Smithsonian Digitization Program Office, said, “Digitizing our vast and complex collection is a top priority. Through our collaboration with Autodesk, we can now share these treasures with a much wider audience than ever before. We believe the x3D Explorer will open new doors for education and research in ways we haven’t even imagined yet.â€
Autodesk has long supported museums and heritage organizations worldwide through its reality computing solutions, helping preserve cultural artifacts, historical structures, and scientific specimens. By creating detailed 3D models, the Smithsonian’s most treasured items will be preserved for future generations, while also enhancing access for researchers, educators, and students.
Only about 1% of the Smithsonian’s total collection is currently on display, and many items are never shown due to their fragility or rarity. The ability to showcase them digitally provides an unprecedented opportunity for global engagement and learning.
The x3D Explorer offers a full online museum experience, complete with galleries, guided tours, research data, and a 3D object viewer. It launches with 21 high-quality 3D models from the Smithsonian’s collection, including iconic artifacts and scientific specimens.
Amar Hanspal, senior vice president at Autodesk, said, “We’re proud to help preserve these invaluable pieces of history and humanity. Our goal is to inspire people, especially students, to explore science, technology, engineering, and anthropology through immersive 3D experiences.â€
The 3D models available on the Smithsonian x3D Explorer are free to view, interact with, and even download for personal or educational use. Some models can be printed using 3D printing technology, allowing classrooms around the world to work with physical replicas of historical and scientific treasures.
This initiative is part of the Smithsonian's broader digitization effort, which faces the challenge of preserving millions of 3D objects. To streamline the process, the Smithsonian used Autodesk ReCap and Maya to capture and convert physical artifacts into detailed 3D models, ensuring they can be viewed in high quality through the x3D Explorer.
