The Mt. Prospect Fire Department officially moved into their new Station 14 just ten days ago, but it's no surprise that the place isn't fully finished yet. The contractor didn’t waste any time—within days of the move, they started tearing down the old station next door. The new firehouse shares the same address as the old one: 2000 E. Kensington. While most areas are looking good, there’s still a punch list of tasks to complete. One of the most noticeable things left unfinished is the front bay doors. Right now, they’re basic gray steel with no windows. It seems the permanent doors have been rejected twice already. The first time, they were taken off for repainting due to an “orange peel†texture on the finish. When they were returned, they never even left the truck! Eventually, the final doors will include windows, as originally planned. Interestingly, the new station was built to strict sustainability standards, especially in preparation for severe weather. A few years back, a major storm hit the area and caused significant damage. After that, officials realized the north end of town lacked a strong shelter for residents in case of another severe weather event. Although the exact specifications aren’t detailed here, the building was designed with resilience in mind. It’s clear that safety and long-term durability were top priorities during construction. So, these updated photos… won’t be the last! There’s still work to be done, and the department is settling in. Stay tuned for more updates as the new station continues to take shape.
