New packaging materials forming key equipment achievements to fill the domestic gap
The project titled "Establishment of Key Equipment and Technology for High-performance Polymer Packaging Materials Based on Simulation," led by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology, was officially launched in the city yesterday morning. The research outcomes were successfully evaluated, with experts stating that the performance metrics meet or exceed national standards, and the technology is at an internationally leading level.
According to reports, the project was approved by the Provincial Science and Technology Department back in 1999. It was jointly funded by South China University of Technology and City Huilong Plastic Machinery Co., Ltd., under the support of Guangdong Province and the National Natural Science Foundation, as well as other science and technology initiatives. This is a comprehensive innovation that integrates computer modeling and simulation, rheology, mechanical engineering, control systems, and polymer materials—showcasing multidisciplinary collaboration.
One of the key achievements of the project is the development of a new type of extruder known as the "chaotic mixing low-energy extruder." On-site testing conducted by the Guangdong Provincial Technical Supervision Machinery Product Quality Inspection Station confirmed a significant breakthrough in energy efficiency. Previously, the production of polymer packaging materials in China relied heavily on foreign technology, with major suppliers including Japanese companies like Sumitomo, Modern, and Musashino, as well as South Korean firms such as Sae-ahn. This breakthrough has secured independent intellectual property rights, filled a domestic gap, and broken the long-standing dominance of foreign products in the Chinese market.
The achievement has already generated substantial economic and social benefits. It holds great significance for the advancement of China's packaging industry, the promotion of modern packaging technologies, and the enhancement of product competitiveness across various sectors, including food, beverages, dairy, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and industrial and agricultural chemicals. With this innovation, China is taking a stronger step toward technological self-reliance and sustainable development in the packaging sector.
