The first "domestic shield machine" of Shenyang Heavy Machinery was born
At the end of November, Shenyang is set to launch its first domestically produced shield machine for subway construction, marking a significant milestone in the city's infrastructure development. This advanced tunnel-boring equipment will play a key role in the ongoing expansion of the Shenyang Metro system.
According to an official from Shenyang Heavy Machinery Group, the shield machine represents the pinnacle of modern tunneling technology, featuring over 10,000 individual components. A 6.4-meter diameter model can cost up to $5 million, but despite its high technical standards, it remains significantly more affordable than imported alternatives. Industry experts note that while some core components are manufactured locally, many precision parts still need to be sourced from abroad. As a result, full localization of the shield machine is still a long-term goal.
To accelerate the integration of advanced equipment and technology, the company formed a joint venture with two international firms—Germany’s Wilt Group and France’s NFM Company—on April 9 this year. The new company, Shenyang Weite Heavy Tunnel Engineering Machinery Complete Equipment Co., Ltd., handles the procurement of imported parts, which are supplied by the foreign partners. So far, the first batch of critical components has been successfully delivered from Germany, and the first domestically produced shield machine is now fully prepared for deployment.
This collaboration not only enhances the technical capabilities of local manufacturers but also strengthens Shenyang’s position as a growing hub for advanced engineering solutions in China’s transportation sector.
