Pneumatic Disc Brakes: High-tech Breakthrough
In a major breakthrough for China's automotive industry, Jiangsu Hengli Brake Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has successfully developed an air-pressure disc brake assembly that was once heavily reliant on foreign technology. This innovation, now recognized as a high-tech product in Jiangsu Province, has been designated as a key project under the 2006 National Torch Plan. The product is equipped with numerous independent intellectual property rights and advanced core technologies, marking a significant step toward self-reliance in critical auto components.
The new disc brake system incorporates internationally advanced design principles, using pneumatic dual push-plate double-adjustment technology to automatically manage excessive clearance caused by wear on friction components and brake discs. It features automatic alarms, adjustments, and compensation, ensuring quick and effective emergency braking for high-speed vehicles. This not only enhances safety but also reduces the risk of accidents during operation.
Tested and verified by the National Automobile Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, the product meets or exceeds domestic standards and can fully replace imported alternatives. Many luxury car manufacturers and heavy truck producers have already adopted this innovative solution, integrating it into their standard production lines.
For years, traditional drum brakes dominated China’s automotive market, but their outdated designs led to issues like brake lag, overheating, noise, and frequent maintenance. These problems posed serious risks to vehicle safety.
Jiangsu Hengli Brake, a key state-owned enterprise specializing in automotive brakes and steering systems, has become a major supplier to leading automakers such as FAW, Dongfeng, and Iveco. With an annual capacity of 500,000 sets, the company has significantly contributed to the development of the domestic auto parts industry.
According to Xu Qichen, Chairman and General Manager of Hengli Brake, the company has focused on improving quality, expanding its product range, and investing in R&D since China joined the WTO. This strategy has allowed Hengli to develop cutting-edge products like the air-pressure disc brake, which now generates profits and meets international standards.
Xu Qilu emphasizes that China’s auto parts industry remains weak, with most manufacturers lacking scale, technical capability, and competitiveness. To improve industrialization and create export advantages, the industry must focus on research and development of key components, pursue independent innovation, and develop technologically advanced products.
In the 1980s, over 90% of luxury cars in Europe used air-pressure disc brakes, while trucks and trailers had a 70% adoption rate. However, due to international restrictions, Chinese vehicles still relied on traditional drum brakes. A few manufacturers had to import foreign patents to enhance their brand image.
To align with global standards, Hengli Brake collaborated with renowned institutions like Jiangsu University and Nanjing Iveco Axle Factory. Through extensive R&D, they introduced German technology concepts and innovated key components such as brake discs, clutches, and adjusting screws. Their innovations include multi-screw axial positioning devices, built-in angle sensors, and intelligent brake linings.
The company has obtained six invention and new technology patents, making this braking system a leader in domestic technology. Experts confirm that the device offers superior braking torque, better heat dissipation, and reduced thermal fade. Its performance is about 25% higher than similar domestic products, while the cost is just two-thirds of imported alternatives.
With a projected domestic demand of 200,000 units this year, increasing production could generate up to one billion yuan in sales and save two billion yuan in foreign exchange. This achievement marks a turning point for China’s automotive industry, showcasing the power of innovation and self-reliance.
