Fast4m Tooling LLC, a prototype mold specialist, is revolutionizing the blow mold manufacturing process by offering a more efficient and cost-effective solution for mold makers. Based in Troy, the company is focusing on reducing both time and expenses in traditional mold production. Rob Esling, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Fast4m, explained that their method starts with stacking steel or aluminum sheets instead of cutting from solid blocks. This innovative approach eliminates up to 80% of the machining steps typically involved in standard mold manufacturing. By using computer-aided design (CAD) data along with high-speed lasers, the metal sheets are cut into near-final shapes. Each sheet has slight variations, and when stacked together, they form a rough mold structure. Some molds can consist of as many as 400 individual sheets. Once the basic structure is in place, moldmakers can use conventional techniques to refine the shape and surface finish. Additionally, this method allows for the insertion of watermarks between the layers, which is particularly useful for branding or identification purposes. According to Fast4m, this process can lead to cost savings of 10 to 15% in production. Esling emphasized that Fast4m’s goal is not to compete with mold makers but to provide them with a valuable tool to enhance their workflow. The company has already developed molds for injection molding, stamping, and sheet metal forming. They are currently working on prototypes for blow molding and are actively seeking partners to help bring this technology to market. By combining advanced laser cutting with modular assembly, Fast4m is setting a new standard in mold manufacturing—offering speed, flexibility, and efficiency in a traditionally slow and costly industry.
