High tension electrostatic separators are specifically designed for the separation of titaniferous mineral sands, hard rock ilmenite and rutile, cassiterite, tantalite, wolframite, iron ore, as well as plastics from metals in waste recycling systems. These machines take advantage of the differences in electrical conductivity between various minerals within an ore feed. The high-tension roll electrostatic separator (HTR) uses a grounded roll to transport the feed material through a high voltage ionizing field (corona), where particles become charged through ion bombardment. Conductive particles transfer their charge to the grounded carrier electrode (roll) and are then thrown off by centrifugal and gravity forces. Non-conductive particles, on the other hand, remain pinned to the electrode surface and are transported around the roll before dropping off, either due to charge dissipation or mechanical means such as brushes and high-voltage AC wipers.
The throughput capacity of a high tension electrostatic separator is closely related to the roll speed, roll width, and the characteristics of the feed material. For rolls with smaller diameters, higher rotation speeds are necessary to maintain a sufficient feed rate. However, at higher RPMs, coarse, non-conductive particles may leave the roll surface too early due to increased centrifugal force, causing misplacement in the conductor stream. Conversely, under low RPM conditions, fine conductive particles may not gain enough inertia to be thrown off the roll, leading to misplacement of the non-conductor stream. Therefore, for processing particle mixtures with varying physical properties—including conductivity, particle size, and density—it's essential to adjust the roll speed and electrode positions to optimize the overall process.
