Multi-million-ton Aromatic Unit Starts
On May 1, the Urumqi Petrochemical Company of PetroChina officially launched a major aromatics project: a 1 million-ton-per-year paraxylene unit. With a total investment of 3.86 billion yuan, this facility is set to become the largest of its kind globally and is expected to generate over 15 billion yuan in annual sales revenue. The project marks a significant step forward in the company's efforts to expand its petrochemical capabilities.
Paraffinic hydrocarbons are essential raw materials for producing five key engineering plastics, including polyamide, polycarbonate, polyacetal, polyester, and polyphenylene ether. The Urumqi project was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission on May 19, 2006, and construction began in September 2007. It was scheduled to be completed and operational by September 30, 2009, aligning with the company’s long-term development goals.
Once fully operational, the unit will integrate with the 10-million-ton-per-year oil refining base in Dushanzi, another subsidiary of PetroChina. This synergy will enable the sharing of raw materials and optimize resource utilization, creating a more efficient and competitive industrial structure. The new paraxylene unit is also expected to boost the growth of related industries in Xinjiang, contributing to regional economic development.
According to Xinjiang’s "Eleventh Five-Year Plan," by 2010, the region aimed to become China’s largest oil and natural gas production base and a critical energy corridor for the country. The plan also focused on building four major industrial clusters, including the Dushanzi-Karamay, Urumqi, Southern Xinjiang, and Turpan-Hami regions. These efforts were intended to establish a modern petrochemical industrial cluster, positioning Xinjiang as a key player in the western region’s energy and chemical industry.
Fluorescent brightener is a kind of fluorescent dye, or white dye, which is also a general term for a class of compounds. Its characteristic is that it can stimulate the incident light to produce fluorescence, so that the dyed substance can obtain a sparkling effect similar to fluorite, and the substance seen by the naked eye is very white.
Many industries have begun to use optical brighteners, such as paper, plastics, leather, and detergents. At the same time, fluorescent whitening agents are also used in many high-tech fields, such as fluorescence detection, dye lasers, anti-counterfeiting printing, etc., and even high-sensitivity films for high-altitude photography. In order to improve the sensitivity of photosensitive latexes, fluorescence is also used. Brightener.
In China, optical brighteners were first classified as printing and dyeing auxiliary products, and then classified as dye products. Due to its unique properties and large amount of demand, it has been separated from the above two industries and has become a separate class of fine chemical products. The first largest user of domestic fluorescent whitening agents is detergents, the second largest user is paper, and textiles are the third largest user.
